Frances led a vibrant, warm and adventurous life. We would love for you to share any memories, anecdotes, comments, pictures or simply condolences.
Born in Edinburgh, Scotland
16TH MARCH, 1950
Frances was born to a loving mother and father, Catherine Gray (born Ellis) and Henry Gray.
She was joined by her brother Will on 26th December 1952. Their father tragically died aged just 35, when Frances was five years old. He had been on the "Japanese hellship", the Lisbon Maru, and then endured unspeakable horrors as prisoner of war. Thankfully, Frances' mum Catherine - a devout Catholic - lived a long and healthy life.
Frances loved her mum dearly, and always talked about how well she had coped as a single mum in the 1950s.
Frances enjoyed a simple yet happy childhood in Linlithgow. As Frances and her brother have often said, they never thought of themselves as "not having much".
To earn pocket money to go to what were then called the pictures or to buy a nice dress, Frances would pick strawberries. More than a half a century later, she would still refuse to eat them. Frances also worked as a "Saturday girl" at Woolworths and Robertson Rainwear in Edinburgh.
Frances was always bright as a button. She was the first in her family to get a higher education... despite not always seeing eye to eye with the teacher nuns of Craiglockhart College of Education.
Frances would go on to become the favourite primary school teacher to countless children.
Frances' zest for adventure and her larger than life personality led her to spread her wings beyond post-war Britain. She moved to Abu Dhabi in 1976 to teach at the Al Khubairat British School.
And it is in Abu Dhabi, on a beach, on a hot and sunny day in October 1979, that she met Peter. A dashing Austrian with a catamaran...
Married in Frankfurt, Germany
15TH SEPTEMBER, 1982
It was not a boring time. Expat beach parties, gold souks, Bedouin experiences, alcohol ration cards, exotic trips...
But, her fascinating, colourful life was still only beginning in the Middle East.
Frances and Peter not only travelled most of the world together, making wonderful and lasting friends wherever they went, they also called six countries across three continents home.
Over the course of almost 40 years of a happy marriage, Frances and Peter lived in places large - Frankfurt, Athens - and small: Middelburg, Hamm am Rhein, Worms, Ericeira.
Their only child ("one was enough") Eddy was born while Frances and Peter lived in South Africa. It would be the great privilege and fortune of his life to have such a kind, funny, interesting and loving mum.
Germany was home twice in Frances' life. Not your typical expat, Frances taught herself excellent German, which she spoke in the most unique of accents.
Even while in Germany, Frances forged life-long friendships with lovely people from across the world, notably the US - many stationed there with the military -, France, and the UK.
Return to Scotland and her final adventure
2011-2022
Frances and Peter returned to Linlithgow in 2011 to live in Frances' childhood home, her mother's old but cosy council estate flat in Linlithgow. She was as at ease going back to Scotland as she had been in the most foreign of cultures.
This was because Frances was truly interested in other people, no matter who they were. She knew - instinctively - that we're all just people with our stories, problems, fears, hopes. Frances was given the great gift of unconditional warmth and empathy.
Frances and Peter kept up their love of travel. They visited the Big Apple (twice!), Niagara Falls, Elba, Sardinia, the Austrian alps, the Côte d'Azur, the Algarve, the Orkneys, the Isle of White and more.
The otherwise dark Covid period was brightened by the arrival of Cockleroy, a handsome ginger bundle of feline joy, and named after Frances' childhood cat.
Frances was ready for another big adventure. She moved with Peter and Cockleroy to Portugal in November 2021. A country she loved from many happy family trips there over the years.
Tragically, this adventure was cut short. Several serious health difficulties proved to be too much, and Frances passed away on January 5th.
Mercifully, she did not suffer. And Peter and Eddy will always be grateful to the nurses, who broke all covid rules to let them say a final goodbye.
Frances now rests by the sea she loved so much. In Santo Isidoro cemetery, just outside Ericeira.
Frances would have wanted us to end on a bright note. And there are few brighter than the music Frances loved. Music with soul.
